Event Recap: Raising Awareness on Addiction and Recovery
On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, the Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted a powerful virtual discussion on addiction, recovery, and support for individuals and families affected by substance use disorder. We were honored to welcome Aisha Diss, Founder and Executive Director of project.ME, who shared her lived experience and impactful work focused on long-term opioid use disorder and justice involvement. Her insights were both moving and informative.
The event was moderated by Dr. Lakeya Stewart, a trained mental health professional and spiritual leader, who skillfully guided the conversation and facilitated a thoughtful Q&A session with attendees. Thank you to all who joined us on Facebook Live for this important and empowering event. Together, we continue to raise awareness, promote healing, and stand in solidarity with those impacted by addiction. |

Honoring Our Legacy Through Service and Sisterhood
Honoring Our Legacy Through Service and Sisterhood
“It is pleasing to a heartfelt depth to see her not as self-centered, not desirous of selfish power, not wanting the plaudits of people, not wanting glory-but with purpose that directs her activities and all that she may control toward lifting somebody else.” –
“Delta Girl”, Mary McLeod Bethune
In 1913, nineteen of the twenty-two Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. marched in the historic Women’s Suffrage Parade—fully aware that the fight for justice was far from equal. Unlike many of the women around them, they were Black women in a segregated America, marching for rights they were still being denied. Though asked to walk at the back of the line, they did so with dignity and determination, setting the tone for over a century of service-driven leadership. Today, the Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Inc. proudly continues that legacy—not only in our commitment to sisterhood, but in our unwavering dedication to serving the greater Fort Wayne community. Our impact stretches across generations and neighborhoods, reaching those most in need through education, advocacy, and acts of love in action.

Celebrating Legacy, Building Community. We began 2025 by celebrating Founders Day, honoring 112 years of sisterhood and service. Members gathered at DeBrand Fine Chocolates to view the National Founders Day Celebration virtually—an occasion not only to reflect on our history but to reaffirm our commitment to purposeful outreach in Fort Wayne.
Uplifting Health & Heritage. In February, our focus turned to community wellness and cultural celebration. We hosted a Healthy Eating and Cooking Class, equipping families with practical tools to support their well-being. We also partnered with the Fort Wayne NAACP for their Black History Month Brunch, where our very own Vice President, Dawn Moore, served as Mistress of Ceremonies. These efforts combined celebration with education—two pillars of community empowerment.

Advocacy in Action. Our commitment to advocacy continued at Delta Days at the State Capitol, where members joined others from across the state to engage with legislators and push for policies that support equity and justice. Guided by the theme “being the change we want to see,” our presence reaffirmed that public service and policy go hand in hand.
Strength Behind the Service. Behind every service project is a foundation of unity. In March, the chapter emphasized connection and wellness among members through activities like Walk It Out Thursdays, handwritten cards to Delta Dears, a virtual book club and a community worship day. These moments of intentional care and shared reflection help strengthen the bonds that empower our chapter to serve the broader Fort Wayne community with energy, compassion, and purpose. A Legacy that Lives On. From the back of the line in 1913 to the front lines of change today, the legacy of Delta Sigma Theta continues to thrive through action. The Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter stands proudly on that foundation—united in sisterhood, fueled by purpose, and committed to making a difference in every life we touch.

Held at Wayne High School, the event brought together organizations, health experts, and families to share vital resources that support the physical and mental health of our community. Our chapter hosted a Delta table where we distributed vaccine education materials and other wellness resources to attendees. In addition, a community blood drive was held on-site in partnership with the American Red Cross, offering attendees an opportunity to give back in a life-saving way. We are honored to have participated in this impactful initiative and remain committed to service that uplifts and empowers. Thank you to everyone who joined us! |

Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc. Puts People First in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS
“The chapter's goal is to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We want to educate the community on how they can keep themselves and others safe. We believe through education, advocacy, and collaboration, we can help to put an end to AIDS.”
The Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is putting people first—through compassion, advocacy, and action. As part of their ongoing commitment to health equity and HIV/AIDS awareness, the chapter recently donated Bags of Prevention to support individuals in the community and clients of local outreach organizations. These thoughtfully assembled kits contain essential items designed to promote health, safety, and education. But beyond the supplies, each bag carries a deeper message: You are seen. You are valued. You are not alone.
This project was carried out through the International Awareness and Involvement principle, one point of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust. Focused on addressing global health and humanitarian concerns through local action, this effort reflects the chapter’s belief in service that uplifts individuals, strengthens communities, and connects us to a greater global mission. From increasing access to resources to reducing stigma, we demonstrate that when people come first, meaningful change begins.

FWAC at the Great American Cleanup - A clean city makes a difference!
The Great American Cleanup - the nation’s largest community improvement program that Fort Wayne has participated in for over 20 years. Fort Wayne Deltas came to show our community pride by lending a hand to clean up littered roadsides, parks, trails and river ways. It looks better to residents and visitors and improves the overall quality of life. Litter, graffiti, unkempt parks and trails, and scattered debris create unsightly areas that would give visitors the wrong impression. Through the work of volunteers, we can come together and show how much we care about Fort Wayne’s neighborhoods and public spaces. Transforming lives, Impacting Communities.
"Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It's important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It's the way in which we ourselves grow and develop." - Dorothy Height
