The Fort Wayne Chapter was chartered on June 19, 1971, with then Regional Director Hortense Canady in charge. The charter members were Maurice H. Abel, Floretta A. Clancy, Linda Fulmore, Peggy Garvin, Brenda Holmes, Carol Ann Patterson, Bettye P. Poignard, Alberta Robinson, Audrey Sharpe, Ernestine D. Stovall, Alva B. Sweet, and Florene Williams, Charter President.
During the early years, the chapter bonded and grew with members who had been initiated into collegiate chapters. They adhered to the five point programmatic thrust. Among the activities they sponsored were Easter Egg Hunts, Jabberwocks, Art Shows, Bake auctions, Jazz programs, Tutorial programs, Teen Lifts, Delteen programs, Hypertension Screening and the Joe Louis Youth Olympics. Special Reading-is-Fundamental programs were held at several elementary schools in the area, and Deltas partnered with The Art Museum of Fort Wayne and Allen County to sponsor notables such as Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Charlayne Hunter-Gault and Odetta to participate in community activities. The Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter is ever ready to venture into uncharted territory in the pursuit of our goals. We are forever grateful for our twelve charter members who paved the way for the more than 100 members in the Fort Wayne area. |
